Foster Home Feedback

11/21/2021 Volunteer Feedback: I got a chance to spend a couple of building shifts with Dante. Dante is a very typical, intense border collie. He’s sweet, demands attention, is incredibly intelligent, and needs to be busy mentally and physically. He loves to get pets, chase a ball and go for walks. If you haven’t had a border collie before, they are not for someone looking for a dog that is a couch potato. They are ready to go at any point of the day and night, even if they are injured. They herd things that move, so busy, running children, dogs at dog parks, etc. It's important to make sure you are positive with them as their incredible intelligence makes them smart and sensitive. Dante would do great in a home where the person is really active, so a runner or someone that likes to take longer walks or hikes. He will also need some sort of activity, such as playing ball (border collies often will not ‘retrieve’ the ball but you can train them too), learning frisbee/disc, agility, or some sort of obedience.

Dante, like most border collies, is prone to obsessive-compulsive behaviors, such as staring at things, shadows, laser lights, etc so you need to be aware of making sure to watch for these behaviors and use positive reinforcement and distraction from them. Dante is also a bit vocal so will bark a bit, may use his voice to communicate with you as well.  When Border Collies are busy, chasing, or stretched, their natural instinct is to do the ‘nip’, just like they would in a herding environment. So it requires diligence in making sure to watch this and set them up for success.

Dante ultimately will be one of the most gratifying, intelligent animals you will ever meet. They are truly exceptional animals as the most intelligent dog breed there is, so if you are looking for an active family member that at times, may just outsmart you, Dante is your guy!

11/16/2021 Volunteer Feedback: I've had the pleasure of interacting with Dante quite a few times since he has been at our facility.  To be transparent, herding breeds, and particularly border collies, are not my favorite group of dogs. However, Dante has totally won me over.

Dante is 100% border collie, personality and all. He isn't just energetic, he NEEDS a job to do to be happy. Our facility volunteers have done a great job at exercising him both mentally and physically and he is thriving from it. Dante is one of the smartest dogs I've met and catches on to new things so quickly. Going through obedience classes would almost be a must for him, and I think he would really enjoy getting into agility or tricks classes.  He loves to play fetch, which is a great way to incorporate both physical exercise and some mental exercise by including basic obedience work into the activity. I think he would also love to be a running or biking partner!

Dante is dog-friendly, but he can be a bit socially awkward. If he doesn't have a good outlet for his mental and physical energy, he can redirect some of his frustration/energy on his dog mates in the form of trying to herd them. If you have ever watched videos of border collies herding livestock, they tend to start nipping and barking frantically if they get frustrated with the lack of response from the herd.  Dante has exhibited this behavior with some dogs, and as you can imagine, some dogs do not appreciate this interaction.  However, Dante can also be very playful, particularly if the dog is of matching playstyle/energy but is a "well balanced" dog. Meaning not necessarily submissive, but also not overly dominant.  Dante has done very well with my female Pittie who is very even keel. She will play with him, but when she has had enough, she appropriately corrects him, and he respects her space. Dante likely wouldn't be a dog who you could bring to a dog park, as it may be too overwhelming to him. However, I do think he could benefit from a dog friend who is patient with his quirks but can also continue to guide Dante on proper dog-dog interactions.

Another common trait of herding breeds is being leary of strangers and getting overstimulated in busy households.  Dante certainly has this trait. While he is high energy and needs to be engaged often, he would not do well in a "busy" household. He will not be good around kids nor in a house with a lot of people coming and going.  Herding breeds tend to "herd" children; which can include nipping at them as this is what they would do when herding livestock. Not their fault, it's in their DNA but does not make them ideal pets for households with kids.  Dante can acclimate to new people, he interacts with new people almost every shift at our facility. However when in a home, he may tend to become more reactive to new people.  This is very easily resolved with guidance from a trainer and can be incorporated into the mental exercises he will need to be a happy dog.

Dante is potty trained. He does fine in a kennel, however, he needs some work on going into the kennel. He loves to go for walks; he sometimes fixates on cars, but our facility volunteers have been working with him on this and he is progressing nicely!

What is the best thing about Dante?  Even though all I have written about is how energetic he is, he also LOVES to snuggle. He is one of the best cuddle bugs. If you sit down, he will curl up on your lap and lean into you for pets and kisses. It's almost as if he melts into you. Dante adores affection from people, once he is comfortable with them.  I think when he is getting enough mental and physical stimulation, he will be a great buddy to snuggle on the couch with and watch some TV.

Dante is the most energetic snuggle bug I have ever met, and although herding breeds are not my thing, I adore Dante. He needs a special home to give him the mental and physical stimulation he needs to be a happy dog, but I'm confident we can find him this home.  If you are looking for a dog with who you can be active, grow with, snuggle with, and enjoy life, Dante is your guy.  Please consider meeting this handsome fella -  promise you will fall in love!

11/16/2021 Volunteer Feedback: Dante has the sweetest eyes!  He is very smart and likes to have a job to do!  Tonight we went for a nice long walk and he did so well.  He likes to take the lead, but if you ask him to sit or leave it, he certainly abides.  He loves to play with fluffy stuffed toys and he also likes to snuggle on the couch.  I think Dante will do very well in a home with an active lifestyle.  He will need lots of mental stimulation and exercise!

11/14/21 Volunteer Feedback: We had the pleasure to take Dante on a shelter break.  He settled in quickly and won our hearts over.  Dante is a typical border collie personality: very smart and playful. He loves toys and likes to carry them around.  He is able to entertain himself and play independently. Every once in a while he will resource guard a high-value treat like a bully stick.

He loves sitting on the couch and cuddling. Dante is 100 percent house trained, sleeps through the night, ignores other dogs, and is people-friendly. He might bark at a new person coming into the house but within seconds he is their friend. Dante is a good dog who deserves a home.  I think he would best thrive in a house with older kids as well who could walk and run with him.  To view additional dogs available for adoption, please see our website:
